Talk to People Who Actually Live There
Ask your Uber or Lyft driver where locals actually eat. Ask the barista at your usual cafe where they go on their day off. These conversations consistently surface places no algorithm would show you.
Explore on Foot
The single most effective method for finding hidden gems is walking. Pick a neighborhood you rarely visit, set aside two hours, and just walk slowly. Look for:
- Small signs tucked into buildings (basement bars, courtyard cafes)
- Places with handwritten menus in the window
- Spots with a small but obviously devoted regular crowd
- Alleys, courtyards, and side streets — many cities hide some of their best places off the main drag
